Many sunless tanning lotions use the ingredient dihydroxyacetone (DHA). DHA is a colorless sugar that interacts with the dead skin cells, and results in a color change to the skin when it is applied. It provides a bronzed look and generally results in color change within five to seven days. The only drawback is that getting an even tan is very difficult.

Spray Tanning
Both spray tanning and tanning lotion are almost the same. The only difference is that in spray tanning,  the tanning solution is sprayed on to the body with the use of a spray gun. You can also get tanning lotion sprayed on to your body in a tanning booth, specifically built for the purpose. Spray tanning is a recent development in colorless tanning solutions. Although it does not have a bronzer, it provides a less streaky and more even tan.

Tanning Beds
Tanning beds, also known as sun beds, have fluorescent tubes that emit ultraviolet (UV) rays. A tanning bed provides you with a tan by exposing you to a form of artificial sunlight. Although tanning beds are considered safe, there is still a chance of over-exposure if the proper precautions are not taken.

Tanning Pills
There are generally three varieties of tanning pills. These are pills with carotenoids pigments, pills with tyrosine, and pills with no active ingredients. The tanning pills that contain carotenoids pigments, when consumed internally, saturate the fat layers just below the skin, which leads to a change in the skin color. There is no medical evidence that the other  two varieties of tanning pills have any effect on the color of the skin.

The cost of sunless tanning methods differs depending on the method that you use. Visiting a tanning salon may cost you $100 or more. By settling for sunless tanning, you can easily achieve that beautiful look without damaging your skin.
