Self tanning products which were introduced in 1960’s are a boon for all the tan lovers today. In a bid to achieve that "sun-kissed" look, the attention has increasingly turned to these self-tanning products.

Most of them contain the active ingredient DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) which is an effective and safe ingredient to produce a great-looking tan. It is a colorless sugar derived from glycerin and is non-carcinogenic. Depending upon the type of skin that a person has and the type of application, the tan can last for a period of five to seven days.

But, this tan will obviously depend upon other pre-application procedures that the person might have undertaken which includes exfoliating, showering and moisturizing.

The technological advancements have taken tanning to a different level altogether. In fact, there are indications that the creams and lotions may be wiped out altogether with the introduction of "wipes" in the market. Wipes are actually toilettes impregnated with DHA.

The precautions that need to be taken while applying any of these self-tanners are often repeated. Usage of sunscreen, goggles, exfoliating, and even application are some of the things that are stressed time and again.

Even while using a tanning bed, don't forget the all-important tanning bed lotion. Don't let the allure of a tan make the tanning bed rob you of essential oils which would lead to an older, aged skin. So, it is always better if you choose a lotion with a built-in anti-aging formula and protector to protect your lips from chapping.

And yes, nowadays products have been launched which give an instant tan and are quite affordable. Also, some of them are two-in-one thus fulfilling the requirements of a bronzer and a tanner, simultaneously.
