The tanning pills attract a lot of
controversy as they are not supposed to be safe for ingestion. On the
other hand, for the tan worshipers, there is nothing better than a pill
as they can just swallow it and become fashionable.
What are
these tanning pills and are they really safe for human consumption is
the big question? Just for your knowledge, these tanning pills have not
yet been approved by the FDA.
Besides, there
are other accompanying hazards. The skin may turn carrot orange instead
of an even brown tan. Also, apart from the requisite portions of your
body which get tanned, the other portions may also get the ill-effects
of a pill. For example, your palms, urine and even the white of the eyes
may turn orange and you may end up looking as if you have jaundice. In
fact, this deposition of the pigment on your retina can even be
dangerous.
There are also other adverse effects that have been
reported with the use of the tanning pills. There have been reports of
nausea, itching, cramping and diarrhea.
A variety of tanning
pills are available in the market. Firstly, there are those that contain
carotenoid- the pigment which makes carrots orange. This pigment when
ingested internally, saturates the fat layer below the skin and gives it
the orangy color. These pills have not been approved by the FDA.
Also,
another disadvantage is that you have absolutely no control over where
this pigment will go and deposit in your body. Generally, the palms of
the hand and the soles of the feet are the areas which turn bright
orange.
Then there are pills that contain tyrosine and those
which contain nothing at all, the ones which run because of advertising
gimmicks. They have no pigments and absolutely no effect on the
production of melanin.
It is thus better to resort to some other
method rather than tanning pills if one desires a tan. After all, safety
comes first!
