There are some things that you absolutely
need to know before you go in for a self-tanning procedure. Here are a
few of them:
-
Sunless tanning products do not invade the deepest layer of your skin.
They work only on the outermost layer, except the tanning beds which
emit UV rays and thus can affect the skin as deeply as the rays from
the sun. If you do choose to go in for a tanning bed, then limit the
time of exposure. Use goggles and do take special care if you are on
certain medications like birth control pills, antihistamines,
tranquilizers, diabetes medicines or even medications for acne.
-
Since, tanning beds use UV rays, their overuse may cause skin cancer
in later life. Other possible harmful effects include skin irritation,
sunburn, changes in immune system as well as eye inflammation.
-
Before going in for an overall tan, get a patch test done and make
sure that you are not allergic to the product.
-
The best time to use a self-tanner is at night as most of them do not
contain any sunscreen. Also, use it a few hours before going to bed so
that it gets ample time to dry out and thus does not stain the bed
covers.
-
Showering, exfoliating and moisturizing are an absolute must before
applying any self-tanner so as to prevent ugly-looking tan lines or
streaks. Focus especially on knees, lower legs, ankles, knuckles and
feet. And then before application, do not forget to rub moisturizer
onto these areas.
