Agreed that it is fashionable to look tanned but then
it is also necessary to take adequate protection before you venture out
into the sun. No matter what, it is important to follow safe sun
practices. Because it is essential to know that tanning may lead to
problems like skin cancer, cataracts, wrinkles, premature aging,
blemishes and yes, even a weakened immune system.
Apart from this, excess of the sun can also cause rashes,
itching, fungal infections and contact dermatitis. Here are some tips
that can be followed by you to acquire a safe and healthy tan.
-
Avoid the sun when it is at its harshest that is between 10 a.m. to 3
p.m. A cloudy sky doesn't mean that the sun can't harm you. It still
can. So, be extremely careful not to venture out during this time. And
yes, for those who think that being in the snow or the lazy beach
means that the sun can't do them any harm are absolutely wrong. In
fact, the sun's rays are strongly reflected at these locations and
that can actually prove to be worse.
-
Do not forget to wear sunscreens and sunblocks: It is almost a sin to
do so. Hence, be extremely careful and lather on sunscreen equipped
with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF), at least 15-20 minutes before
facing the sun. Broad-spectrum sunscreens claim to protect you against
both- UVA as well as UVB rays. Do not be stingy with the use of the
sunscreen. Apply it liberally all over the exposed area of the body
and reapply after every 2-3 hours. Nowadays, cosmetic products like
lipsticks etc. also have in-built moisturizers as well as sunscreens.
Try and opt for these kind of products.
Sunscreens should be
used even on young children especially when they are going out to play
but not on those younger than 6 months as the chemicals in the
sunscreens might irritate their sensitive skins.
Most
self-tanning products like lotions and gels do not contain in-built
sunscreen. So, it is important to apply one even if you have applied a
self-tanning product.
