Sun tanning is darkening of the skin
especially, the fair skins in a natural physiological response
stimulated by the exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sunshine
for increasing the melanin content of the skin. The darkening of the
skin is due to an increase of the pigment called melanin into the skin's
cells after getting exposure to sun's ultraviolet radiation. Melanin is
generally produced by cells in our body called melanocytes to protect
the body from an excess of solar radiation absorption, which is harmful.
There are two ultraviolet radiations that cause tanning, they are-
UVA and UVB rays.
The role that UVB rays play:
-
Helps in triggering the creation and secretion of new melanin into the
skin.
-
It causes the formation of moles and some types of skin cancer too.
-
Stimulation of Vitamin D production.
-
It is more likely to cause sunburns.
-
It is blocked by sunscreens.
The role that UVA rays play:
-
Helps in releasing pre-existing melanin from the melanocytes.
-
It cannot be blocked by sunscreens but is blocked to some degree by
proper clothing
Merits of sun tanning:
-
Provides vitamin D and hardens the bones. Osteomalacia is not caused
by exposure to sun light.
-
Tans the skin and helps in protecting the skin from harmful radiations.
-
Ultraviolet radiation help in the treatment of skin conditions such as
psoriasis and vitiligo. * * sometimes Sunshine is to treat or hide
acne,
To avoid the sunburn on your skin or excess of tanning, try to cover up
skin or wear hats and stay out of direct sunlight. Also you can use some
SPF formula suntanning lotions to avoid the sunburn.
Demerits
of sun tanning:
i. Risk of cancers by the UVB rays.
ii.
Risk of melanoma by the UVA rays.
iii. Over exposure causes sunburn
spots.
iv. Other harmful radiations may penetrate and destroy the
immune system of the body.
Thus, be cautious while you go to sun
tan your body.
